VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) works on a very simple theory. First it takes your voice (what is known in the industry as an analog input) and converts it to a digital signal.

This digital signal is forwarded through a special routing device, known as a PBX, onto the world wide web, where it is sent directly to the receiving PBX, or if you are calling outside your intra-network, it goes to a company known as a Termination Provider, which uses a traditional phone line to ring the person you are calling. They'll never know the difference!
